Book Reviews: The Book of Negroes (2007) - Lawrence Hill

No topicBookNegroesI saw Mr. Hill give a talk to at a symposium organised by the Writers’ Union of Canada. He was a sympathetic and supportive writer who hadn’t yet achieved acclaimed success and so I was rather eager to read The Book of Negroes, Winner of Canada Reads 2009.

After having drudged through several books covered in accolades, I was weary of the Canada Reads endorsement but I had read Lullabies for Little Criminals, its 2007 winner and enjoyed that book quite a bit. Unfortunately for me, The Book of Negroes did not live up to its potential.

Book Reviews: Stargazey (1998)- Martha Grimes

No topicstargazeyI enjoy reading a light mystery once and a while. Martha Grimes creates fast paced, well-written pocketbooks that aren't pieces of literature you feel morally committed to, although some of intertwining characters can require a pen and paper.

Book Reviews: Confessions of a Shopaholic (2001)- Sophie Kinsella

No topicconfessions-dune-accro-du-shoppingTraditional strategy for good story telling is to have a protagonist overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles to reach their goals. Kinsella is very good at creating obstacles.

Book Reviews: The Book Thief (2005)- Markus Zusak

No topicThe book thiefSet in Munich 1938-1943, The Book Thief is about a young German girl who seeks refuge in words to help cope with her present and heal her past. It’s told from Death’s point of view therefore, from the get-go, it’s got some harsh moments but unlike those akin to A Thousand Splendid Suns, this tale is peppered with compassion.

Book Reviews: A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian (2005)- Marina Lewycka

No topictractorsAn 84-year-old former Ukrainian engineer writes a book about tractors while his two rivaling daughters attempt to rid him of a gold-digging tart more than half his age. Original, enlightening, entertaining and fast paced. It’s rare to find a book I don’t want to put down.

Highly recommended.

Book Reviews: Collected Short Stories Vol.1 (1951)- W. Somerset Maugham

No topicMaugham30 short stories, some of which are autobiographical, that chronicle adventures from Spain all the way to the Samoa Islands. The characters are intricate, the settings alluring, the writing is beautiful but the stories are outdated for the 21st century. In other words, despite building effective suspense, with each story there is a dreaded inevitable predictability that makes the finale somewhat deflating. With Maugham it’s the journey, not the destination that counts.

My favourite tales were 'The Poet' and 'The Yellow Streak'.

 The Benefits of Failure

No topicThe Hornet nestthe-girl-who-played-with-fireOk. I failed. Travel and visitors got in the way. You’d need a resolve of steel or an extra set of eyeballs and I’m lacking both. Or all three, depending on how you read that.

Book Reviews: The Fountainhead (1943)- Ayn Rand

No topicthe-fountainhead-book-reviewI read this book four months ago and as it’s 700 pages long I’m now a little hazy on the details (not that I give them out anyway) but can still provide an overall assessment.

Book Reviews: Spy Girl (2003)- Amy Gray

No topicspygirlTerrible book. While the rest of us spent our early twenties bussing tables at Hooters (or was that just me?) Amy Gray got to play Laura Holt in the seedy underground of New York City. The back cover reads:

‘….she finds herself plunged into an intriguing world of “con men, lunatics, narcissists, polygamists, sociopaths, felons, petty thieves, and pathological liars”.’

Sounds like another day at Hooters to me.
