Book Reviews: The Year of Magical Thinking (2006)- Joan Didion
40 years of marriage comes to an abrupt end following a massive heart attack. The Year of Magical Thinking is a recount of the year after the death of Didion’s husband, John, and reads like a poignant reality check.
The tale, raw, stripped of drama or romance, paints a vivid picture of the mental pathway taken after losing someone. It’s a good but sobering read.

Have you ever asked someone what they were chewing and get a 15 minute monologue on the history of latex before the answer? Gum.
That reply holds about the same level of suspense as this book.

Book Reviews: Amsterdam (1998)- Ian McEwan
It’s come to my attention that my ‘reviews’ aren’t typical. For example, I’m not keen on writing out a synopsis. I figure, if you’re really interested, you can Google it somewhere. This review will be short and sweet.
I very much enjoyed this book. It’s only 178 pages long but it’s well paced and provides enough incentive to keep the reader right to the end. More like a short story.

Phew, I managed to finish this book this just under the wire and understand most of it, I think.

At 841 pages I started to panic Tuesday but have no fear. I finished a day early.

Book Reviews: Disorderly Conduct: VLS Reader (1991)- Edited by M. Mark
Another book review?! Whattsa Goin On?
Actually this isn’t so much a book as a collection of short stories but it still qualifies for my 2010 resolution to read one book a week. Disorderly Conduct is January’s third book and now that I’m caught up on reviews, expect to receive a posting as regularly as the Flower Clock. Perhaps not always as exciting.

I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t think I’d like this book but it’s been hanging on my shelf for the last two years. Use it or lose it, as they say.
