New Products: Sprite Remix Berryclear Drinkable Ripoff of Older Soft Drink

Foods and CookingThis week, I found myself craving change. Not drastic change like a majority Conservative government or having a child, but rather something new to satisfy my thirst while enjoying my lunch from the cafeteria. Luckily for me, I found several bottles of the new Sprite Remix Berryclear in the fridge. Purchasing it, I ran back to the lab using all my willpower to contain my excitment. Finally, I cracked the bottle and took a swig of a beverage, although much tastier than Coca Cola's previous foray Sprite: Ice, this new Sprite brand was clearly a ripoff of something I had imbibed before...

Wracking my brain, I finally placed it: Sprite Berryclear tastes just like the berry flavour of Clearly Canadian, a brand of flavoured sparkling water my mother often bought a few years ago! At first I was shocked; how could the Coca Cola megacorporation so shameless rip off a competitor's product? But soon I realized that plagiarism is rampant in todays society, and has been for years. In fact, Coke's flagship product has been ripped off itself several time, i.e. Royal Crown Cola, Diet PC Cola, and Pepsi (In decreasing order of quality). In any case, more competition only serves to benefit the consumer in our imperfect capitalist system, so I guess this brand is good for all concerned.

As for the taste, it is not unlike how I imagine Homer's Skittlebrau would taste if you substituted regular Sprite for Beer. Upon contact with your tongue, the flavour is berryful, and pleasant, although in a no-natural-flavours kind of way. However, the chemically flavour lingers giving this beverage an awkward aftertaste. Yet all-in-all, the berry flavours complement the subtle citrus overtones present in normal Sprite providing a refreshing alternative to the staple soft drink. Although I doubt it will have the staying power of the original, Sprite Remix Berryclear is a worthy entry into the Canadian soft drink market. Grab yourself a bottle today!
