 | New Products: Swiss do Passable Rendition of Hickory Sticks |
Having recently relocated to Switzerland, I have deliberately sought out things that remind me of home. Some things, like chocolate, are a universal constant but there are other things, like the tasty, potaoey snack known as Hickory Sticks, which are no where to be found. Longtime readers of GlobeCord will know my affection for this salty treat from articles such as Hickory Sticks: Is this the end?. Therefore, it was not long before I noticed a Swiss verision of a potato stick on the shelf of my local Migros. As I purchased this Snacketti brand of potato stick I wondered that even though the Swiss are now better than us at hockey, do they have the upperhand in the battle of the best potato stick?
Sadly, for me the answer is no; I have not found a suitable replacement. Snacketti sticks are close, but inferior to the classic Hickory Stick. First of all, from an aesthetic point of view, the brand name Snacketti just doesn't cut it. The name "Hickory Sticks" evokes a sophistocated, almost regal, air while Snacketti sounds like something a Junior Achiever's group would come up with. You don't know how many times I've typed "Snaketti" in writing this review and that just doesn't sound appetizing. But beyond that, the product just doesn't gel. The texture and appearance are close. The sticks are a few millimeters wider, but otherwise similar in shape and size. However, the taste is a little off. The potato flavours are overwhelmed by a moderate barbeque taste which gives the snack an unbalanced, artificial feel. However, overall I guess it will have to do until I make my way back into Frito-Lay Canada marketing domain.
