 | New Products: ''Have you got Arnold Palmer in a can?'' |
It isn't quite time for another New Product review, but when something like this enters one's possession...
Arnold Palmer Tee (C$ 1.49/500ml can)
It's a drink--half iced tea, half lemonade. It comes in a can plastered with pictures of the man himself, and a list of his golfing achievements. It's a little strange.
It becomes somewhat less strange upon investigation: the great golfer Palmer, according to our research, created the drink decades ago. (He golfed and would occasionally mix two drinks together to see if they tasted good--a real renaissance man.) The concoction caught on, at least among golfers; apparently you can walk into any golf club in America, order an Arnold Palmer, and they'll serve you this blend. If you're there to play golf, you'd be well advised to put a lot of booze in it--the round will go by quicker.
The drink? It's all right, I guess--it tastes more like lemony iced tea than tea-flavoured lemonade. Iced tea and lemonade are both easy and cheap to make--you can produce this muck at home for pennies a glass, so unless seeing some golfer's face on a tin can causes you to lose control of your faculties, why shell out? Palmer's got enough money--he should be buying you drinks.
"You do? Then for God's sake let him out!"

However, what is popular over here is known in these parts as a panaché (AKA a shandy) which is half lemonade, half lager. You can even buy it pre-made for you in a can at the store but I recall no interesting portraits on the can. |

I've always wondered. Sounds decent--I'll have to mix myself one this festive season. I generally prefer limeade to lemonade; I wonder if that would be a tasty substitution... |
