 | Book Reviews: Girl with the Pearl Earring (1999) - Tracy Chevalier |
I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t think I’d like this book but it’s been hanging on my shelf for the last two years. Use it or lose it, as they say.
It turned out this novel was only 248 pages and an easy read. The fact that it moved quickly and yet still managed to include an ample amount of description places this book on my ‘good’ list. I should mention that only 20% of the books I read make it there.
Set in 1664 Netherlands, the book is about a sixteen year old girl who must work as a maid for the painter Vermeer to support her parents. It’s concise, well written and provides as a simple reminder to hug the washing machine next time I see it.
For anyone remotely interested in the life of Vermeer, the author has taken some time to research aspects of his adult life but I can’t confirm her accuracy. The book was set in a time when he was married, lived with his mother, created two paintings a year and had seven children. But the more intriguing part of the story is about how life was back in Delft, Netherlands 1664.
