 | Book Reviews: Behind the Scenes at the Museum (1995)- Kate Atkinson |
Phew, I managed to finish this book this just under the wire and understand most of it, I think.
Behind the Scenes at the Museum is a story about a dysfunctional family living somewhere in England sometime between the forties, fifties, sixties and seventies. If I sound confused about that, it’s because I am. In amongst the main story, told in first person, are past and future narratives that are referred to as footnotes but actually take up entire chapters. While each story line is well written this clever attempt to keep the reader guessing:
Where’s Alice?
Who is Pearl?
Is that Albert’s baby?
What happened to Lawrence?
…get’s downright irritating, downright fast. Attempts to be funny seem more farcical when your 250 pages into the story and the author is STILL introducing characters.
In summary, this is a good read if you spend long hours working at a dry cleaners or as a parking attendant but for two hour stretches only, it can feel more like homework.
