 Harness Beat: Return to Paradise

No topicJohnny Superfecta and the other two members of powerful GC faction The Triumverate convened at Woodbine Racetrack last Wednesday night. It's a good place to discuss sensitive matters, as ambient noise in the grandstand makes audio surveillance difficult.

 Harness Beat: Vision

General NewsDid Johnny watch a harness-racing movie on Thursday, while you were watching CSI? And where do sulkies come from, anyways?

 Harness Beat: Festive Edition

 Harness Beat: Up and Down

General NewsThe Fast Layne came in for me last Saturday at 5-1--sweet. He came right back on Thursday, same position at the start, against exactly the same competition--and finished a fading fourth as the even-money favourite. Well, that's harness racing, as I always say.

 Harness Beat: Good Old Buffalo

General NewsThe Associated Press is reporting that five Buffalo-area standardbred horsemen have been arrested for smuggling drugs in their horse trailers. Over the past two years they allegedly moved over 20000 lbs. of ephedrine (the principal component of methamphetamine) from Ontario to Buffalo, whence it was sent on to California. It's unclear how their cover as harmlessly inept Western New York harness racers was blown--seems impenetrable to me. Someone must have talked!

 Harness Beat: Seeing Things

General NewsInside: Johnny confidently dismisses a horse as being out of shape, minutes before she paces a world record; the Grim Reaper bloodies his scythe in front of a horror-struck Johnny, but thankfully doesn't turn to him and say, "You're next."

 Harness Beat: A Summer Win

General NewsDr No swept the Summertime Series--he won the final at Woodbine on Saturday, and was driven to victory by the recently-unearthed remains of Doug Brown. Boy, I sure wish the track announcer wouldn't yell, "Dr No is Dr Yes!" when the horse wins. Next up: can the pacer surpass Sir Hugo Drax (31 victories, 510K lifetime earnings) to become the best standardbred named after a Bond villain?

Harness Beat: Old Horses Skip Town

GamblingThere was no Open pace last night at Woodbine. There weren't enough entries, because all but one of the top older pacers had gone to New Jersey in search of stakes gold. Let's hope the often-drunk horse shippers didn't erroneously send any of them to Jersey, the English Channel Island--they eat horses there. Admirals Express, the eight-year-old grey who's won the past three top-level dashes, is safely biding his time at home in fabulous Orillia.

 Harness Beat: Smarty Who?

General NewsToday's really big race: the Classic Distaff Final at Mohawk, featuring legendary pacing mare and borderline Super-Horse Eternal Camnation. It's being run at a-mile-and-three-eighths! And there are 13 races on the card! No, that's ridiculous; it must be a hoax. I'd better go to Woodbine and investigate, though, just to be sure...
