Les is More: Memoires of a Repeat Offender
My Long Abscence from Globecord explained:
Alas, a while ago - I had the distinct unpleasure of having a heart attack - at the ripe old age of 43 (I am soon to be 45, so things are going well). After over a year of cardiac rehab and dieting and exercising (treadmill, road bike and rowing erg), I have just had a stress test and bloodwork that confirms I am in no danger.
Gee, I hope this excuse works...

Les is More: Another recipe for Johnny Superfecta
Another recipe for the tragically under-fed and under financed:
1 28 oz can of dark red kidney beans.
2 cups cooked white rice.
1 packet of Knorr's chicken gravy.
Cook rice.
Combine with kidney beans.
Make chicken gravy in another pot, then pur over the kidney beans and rice.
Sardines are optional.

Les is More: Epiphanies – Not just for mystics and fanatics anymore…
What is an Epiphany?
It's a moment of insight , of sudden clarity. Like a light bulb going off in your head. You step out of the mainstream of thought into that quietude of clarity and suddenly it's there: a truth gleaming like a new cut jewel amidst the dross of ordinary rock.
It is that moment when you realize a great or sudden truth.

Les is More: Thunder and Lightening - A Religious Event?
The thunderstorm that recently shook l'il ol' Kingston and, I believe, a majority of the rest of the province, had me thinking of being a kid again. In those fond rememberances, I always hear the voice of my Uncle Paul - you know, the crazy Uncle everyone seems to have hiding in their particular closet.
In any case I decided to go out onto the back porch at my house and bask in the warm rain and watch the lightshow across the sky. There are definately times when nature in it's purest manifestation can scare the crap outta you... watching lightening strike about 25 metres away can be one of those times.

Les is More: Recipes for the Cooking Impaired
Cauliflower and Potato Curry
2 lbs cauliflower
15 - 20 baby red potatoes
1 inch knob of fresh ginger root
1 medium sized Vidalia or other sweet onion
2 habineiros, chopped fine or jalapenos
1 tbl good madras curry powder
2 tbls butter or marg
1 tbl olive oil
2 tsp turmeric...do not skimp on this
2 tsp salt
1/4 cup chicken stock -- (1/4 to 1/3)
Break the cauliflower into florets, and soak in cold, lightly salted water. When using small potatoes, clean and leave whole or at most cut in half. Melt the butter or marg and add the oil, then fry the ginger, and the onion and the chiles over very low heat, until onion transparent, then add the turmeric and curry powder, raise the heat and add the drained cauliflower and the potatoes, stirring around well, add a little of the stock, salt and cook over low heat, covered, for about ten minutes. Check for dryness, add the more curry powder if necessary, and more stock if required, and continue cooking, until potatoes are tender, but not mushy....do not mash the vegetables.
As an aside, you can also add fresh peas (or frozen if out of season)
This is comfortably hot, if more heat needed, add more chiles! A really great dish which was made even greater by the addition of the chiles.

Les is More: Fun With SQL
Thanks to Al Payne for giving me publishing access - now I can be as infrequent a contributor as he is! heh heh...
Playing with SQL is a fun pastime - the ability to extract complex information from differnet types of databases is rewarding and it gives you the instant-gratification feeling that programming does as well. When a query hits exactly right and returns what you wanted, what a rush!
I am, however, a bit peeved at MicroSquash (yeah, yeah... who isn't from time to time). Their Transact-SQL language has some neat formatting stuff built in, but lacks the self describing power of Oracle's PL/SQL.
For example, in Oracle, you simply use DESCRIBE and it will generate the column names, data types and field sizes - a necessary product if you want to create a data dictionary.
T-SQL has no such built in capability, you need to generate about 50 lines of SQL code to do what PL/SQL can do in just two.
Phooey.
Goes to show that Microsoft has a long way to go to approach the ease of command that Oracle uses. Of course, the reverse of that is that Oracle has a long way to go to make their Enterprise Manager as nice a GUI as Microsoft's.
