New Products: House Tofu Mix
During a regular Friday-night social event a few months back the ponderous question of tofu came up. While I was well aware that tofu (豆腐) is the curdled phase of the soya bean oft used as a meat substitute, I realized that I had no concept on how the curdling process was actually accomplished. Actually, I had the same paucity of understanding for the process of making cheese curds, but somehow this ignorance didn’t trouble me in the slightest. But my discomfort with this lack of knowledge faded with my blood alcohol levels that evening and I was left to wallow in my ignorance until the following Friday when Kyohei (恭平先生), a regular attendee and my soon-to-be tofu sensei, kindly gave me a box of House brand Tofu Mix. What follows is not only a review, but a detailed documentation of the steps necessary to make tofu in your own kitchen, and tasty tofu at that!

jsuperfecta's private war with Cadbury/Schweppes may be winding down, as he's failed to find a reason to hate their new soda.

New Products: McSars = McBad
In mid-2007, while on reconnaissance for the new Globecord Taxonomy sub-division, GC Marsupial Watch! I had occasion to sample many of the strange and wonderful foodstuffs that are consumed daily Down Under. Now Australian culture is not especially different than Canada, but again and again I ran into different and often refreshing takes on the standard fare I was used to. For example, Tim Tams; basically just a standard choco-biscuit but so extremely well executed that fellow agent riley was caught “loosing” GC property in order to make room for transport of a several week supply back to base. However, this report will detail a product no agent wanted to smuggle back – a sarsaparilla-based drink with the unfortunate name of McSars – which although my consumption of was likely less painful that a case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, left a bad taste in my mouth all the same.

New Products: Schwip-Schwap: the pinnacle of German soft drink efficiency
On a recent jaunt to Germany I had occasion to visit, from what all appearances was, a typical German supermarket. It was not unlike those found elsewhere, perhaps with more sausagified meats and plenty of chocolate. However, it was not the processed animal products or the sweets that garnered my attention; it was the beverage section. For you see Germans like to do many things different than us New World folk: they prefer lederhosen to jeans, german shepherds to greyhounds and zeppelins to airplanes. Efficiency is their mantra, and no better example can be seen in one of their most popular class of soft drinks that dominated the beverage aisle. So simple, yet so elegant – a triumph of German innovation really. I, of course, speak of the cola-orange combination Schwip-Schwap, a truly worthy addition to the soft drink pantheon.

New Products: Little Horses
Colts, the cigarillos seemingly omnipresent at GC meetings, now come in a variety of
different flavours, rather than just regular and mild--and to add to the confusion, the classic Colts Mild
have been renamed Colts Rum and Wine Mild. Agog at the bewildering new choices,
bwilson passed up purchasing a pack of Colts Black Cherry in favour of new Colts Sweet
prior to the GC assembly of 12 MAY 07. What did the assembled bigwigs think?

New Products: Irish Snacks - More Elusive than a Pot of Gold

On a recent sojourn to the Emerald Island, I got to experience many things. From touring the 5000 year-old dwellings of the first inhabitants, to the small fishing villages nestled in rocky coves and even the wonderful pubs of Dublin, I got a wee taste of Irish culture. However, as regular readers of Globecord will already know, one of the aspects of the human condition we are most interested in documenting and discussing are the tasty snack foods that we eat every day. And my friends, although there is tasty food and delicious beer to be had aplenty, I am sad to report that as a snack food culture, the Irish are way behind.

New Products: Cereal Drama
In the first New Product review for quite some time, Johnny Superfecta tries a new cold cereal--a new version of a classic cold cereal, rather, designed for today's youth who demand constant over-stimulation, even at the breakfast table. So, was it SupaShreddies Mega Max? X-treme Weetabix Remix? Der Alpen Berry Blitzkrieg?

New Products: Swiss do Passable Rendition of Hickory Sticks
Having recently relocated to Switzerland, I have deliberately sought out things that remind me of home. Some things, like chocolate, are a universal constant but there are other things, like the tasty, potaoey snack known as Hickory Sticks, which are no where to be found. Longtime readers of GlobeCord will know my affection for this salty treat from articles such as Hickory Sticks: Is this the end?. Therefore, it was not long before I noticed a Swiss verision of a potato stick on the shelf of my local Migros. As I purchased this Snacketti brand of potato stick I wondered that even though the Swiss are now better than us at hockey, do they have the upperhand in the battle of the best potato stick?

New Products: Million Max, move aside
Canadian Time now carries a 10 million candlepower [marketing-speak-rating] flashlight, only $59.99 this week. Online reviews rank it as being a great light for the money.
I looked at one on Saturday. It's a heavy sucker at about 12 lbs, but would certainly help out during late night caching expeditions. So would a Maxabeam, but they're $1,800 US, so of course only Mulder and Scully's employer can afford them.
