 Call Me When I'm Done

Technology in generalWhen my husband and I marveled over his new Samsung 900 phone a few months back, it hadn’t occurred to me that the personalized ringer on this gadget wasn’t the only way I could hear my favored (and rejected) pick, the Mission Impossible theme.

Swiss VoIP to be monitored with Spyware?

Technology in generalSecret GC communications between our Geneva headquarters and North American operatives could soon be compromised if Swiss security company ERA IT Solutions' spyware wiretap actually works. Agents at the WHQ are advised not to click on free porn offers from The Swiss Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications.

GO Train hack makes international headlines

Technology in generalEarly morning Toronto commuters were shocked to learn that their newly elected leader had an appetite for infants. Their concern overcoming rational thinking, some called police. After an investigation authorities were convinced that Prime Minister Stephen Harper was not a cannibal. This triggered an query into the related LED signs.

New Products: Million Max, move aside

Technology in generalCanadian Time now carries a 10 million candlepower [marketing-speak-rating] flashlight, only $59.99 this week. Online reviews rank it as being a great light for the money.

I looked at one on Saturday. It's a heavy sucker at about 12 lbs, but would certainly help out during late night caching expeditions. So would a Maxabeam, but they're $1,800 US, so of course only Mulder and Scully's employer can afford them.

 GC Server Upgrade Underway

Technology in generalWell, after a bit of a snag getting Fedora Core 2 (Final) to run properly on the loaner box, the upgrade of GC's primary server (web, database, email, etc.) is finally underway.

 eBay Bans Navigation Aids!

Technology in generalWhile investigating the purchase of a sextant, a navigation tool used for centuries to fix one's position on the earth using celestial objects, I was presented with the following terse message:
Dear User:

Unfortunately, access to this particular category or item has been blocked due to legal restrictions in your home country. Based on our discussions with concerned government agencies and eBay.ca community members, we have taken these steps to reduce the chance of inappropriate items being displayed. Regrettably, in some cases this policy may prevent users from accessing items that do not violate the law. At this time, we are working on less restrictive alternatives. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we hope you may find other items of interest on eBay.

Thank You.

Samsung SCH-8500 Falls Victim to Brute Force Attack

Technology in generalHaving left my stalwart cell phone charger in San Francisco (but not my heart), I suffered 5 months with only the car charger. However, since I don't own a car, this caused significant phone downtime. So finally I gave in and started searching eBay for a new charger. I ended up winning an auction, paying $12.50 for another SCH-8500 plus charger and manual. The catch: the phone was locked and the seller had no idea what the code was!

 The al-manac: Interesting EULA

Technology in generalI came across this rather interesting end user licence agreement today on another site.

The al-manac: Think twice before buying Belkin!

Technology in generalIt seems Belkin doesn't think routers should pass traffic unchanged, and has started randomly redirecting some browser requests to an ad on their site. While they make decent cables, I won't be buying anything from them that has any logic in it. Their logic and mine certainly aren't in sync!

Les points out that User Friendly has expressed a similar opinion.

 The al-manac: Verisign hasn't surrendered.

Technology in generalApparently Verisign hasn't shutdown Sitefinder permanently. They're going to fight for the right to innovate. Interestingly, the article mentions that there are some lawsuits being filed, including a "proposed class-action suit on behalf of a company that offered similar domain name redirection services as a Web browser add-on." I guess I'm too late to patent that idea.

I wonder if Microsoft has an opinion, since they could build the same service into their browser and not break DNS?
